It has been nearly 9 years since their last album release, Get Hurt. The following year in 2015 the band announced an indefinite hiatus. Fast forward to 2023 New Jersey’s own, The Gaslight Anthem is finally back. Back with a new North American tour and a new single, Positive Charge.
A fast paced and heavy start. A familiar sound reminiscent to the Sink or Swim days, followed by “where did you go?” pronounced by Brian Fallon. Lyrically with a lot of significance not just for Fallon but also for the fans that longed the absence of The Gaslight Anthem during these past 9 years. Despite of being active in other projects, nothing compares when Brian, Alex R, Benny, and Alex Levine come together to form the New Jersey powerhouse.
Even though it’s been nearly 9 years, the band hasn’t missed a beat. From Benny’s thunderous drum sound, to Alex’s deep bass, to the gritty and clean sound of Alex Rosamilia’s guitar. Brian Fallon’s vigorous vocals and lyrics still remain consistent.
“I wanna live, I wanna love you a little longer,
I was invincible many years ago when I was so much stronger
I wanna smile like a letter from an old friend
My arms are wide as oceans
How I’ve missed you, and feelin’ good to be
alive”
A love letter for everyone involved. From the band to the fans. As a fan this was an incredibly long hiatus, but was well worth the wait. The dynamic and unique sound that The Gaslight Anthem produce through the stereo speakers is still as strong as it has always been. A single that combines the sound of Sink and Swim and Get Hurt, with a sparkle of Brian Fallon’s Painkillers. Positive Charge is a perfect track that welcomes everyone to the new chapter in the career of the boys from New Jersey.
“I need a spark, I need a positive charge”
